In the 2023 Bumble x Adobe Express Designathon, our team reimagined Bumble’s app experience to address a pressing challenge:
How might Bumble help college students feel comfortable enough to take their digital connections offline?
Our Team and Approach
Our team, comprised of Berkeley undergraduates—myself, Madelyn Christensen, Anishi Patel, and Sanjana Nitturkar—collaborated closely over 7 hours to deliver an innovative, user-centered solution.
Using
Figma as our brainstorming and prototyping platform, we created two
user personas to identify key pain points, crafted a draft Instagram post using
Adobe Express to showcase our vision, and developed features focused on enhancing safety and facilitating seamless connections.
Our Insights
We
interviewed peers to understand why conversations with matches often fizzle out. The feedback was clear:
Asking someone out too soon can feel rushed, making it hard to continue the conversation.
Waiting too long to ask leaves both parties unsure how to transition to meeting offline.
Proposed Features
The Green Light to Meet Button: Allows users to express interest in meeting up by inputting a date idea. When both parties are ready, the button turns green, signaling mutual interest.
Well-Beeing Safety Checklist: An optional feature that offers a risk assessment for the planned date and safety tips.
The Buzz Word System: Combines audio tracking, trigger phrase recognition, and a discreet alert system. In unsafe situations, users can activate an emergency response without anyone noticing.
Outcome
Our prototype and presentation, designed in Figma and Canva, earned us
2nd place out of 64 students, with judges praising our creative approach and polished UI.
